Emerald Lake Lodge Wedding Photographer
Joel & Jasmine’s Mountain Winter Wedding
Red Bloom Photography
It is so secret that I love winter weddings…combine winter with a dreamy location and
a intimate guest list and I am in heaven!! This day was nothing short of perfection.
They were treated with a rather nice winter forecast…in the sun anyway, the shade
was a little bit colder. They both started their mornings very relaxed in their side by
side cabins at Emerald Lake Lodge. And cause they did not have a bit traditional wedding
party, their rooms were calm and relaxed as there was not a bunch of people getting ready
together. These two had planned to see either other for the first time at the ceremony
but the evening before they emailed me and said they wanted to do a mini first look
instead which was just amazing. Takes a bit of the nerves away and they get to have a nice
cuddly intimate moment just the two of them.
After their mini first look we headed straight to the ceremony and I think everyone was sweating
except a few ladies in dresses. The winter sun was beating down and it made for a mild winter
day. After their ceremony these two toughed out the chilly shade for about 45 minutes to get some
romantic winter wedding photos around Emerald Lake.
Some words from the newly weds
How did you guys meet?
We met initially in grade 9 at John Paul Collegiate. A friend introduced us after I
moved to Okotoks. We didn’t become friends until grade 12, and didn’t start
dating until a year after we graduate high school in 2010.
Please share the proposal story with us?
About a week before Joel had planned to propose, he had bought me a new pair
of skates for my birthday. His plan was to take me out to Lake Louise, have a
morning skate, and then propose in the middle of the lake. It was December 8th,
and we made the trek out to Lake Louise with our camera in tow. The lake was
freshly frozen, and we skated for about an hour. Joel tried to coax me to the
middle of the lake, but I was skeptical because I didn’t trust it was frozen all the
way through as it was still early in the winter season. He kept trying, but I
wouldn’t budge. Finally, Joel had asked if I wanted to check out Vermillion Lakes.
We had never been there before, and he thought it would be a great place to
take pictures. We headed to Vermillion Lakes, got out of the car and Joel handed
me the camera. I started walking on the lake, and began taking pictures of the
mountains. I turned around, and Joel was on one knee. I was completely
shocked, but of course ecstatic. It was perfect because it was just the two of us.
Most memorable moment from your wedding day?
Bride – My most memorable moment was after the ceremony, sitting down for
dinner at the sweetheart table with my new husband, holding his hand and
looking out at all of our closest family and friends who had come to Emerald Lake
to celebrate us, having dinner and enjoying themselves. We both said to each
other: “take a mental picture, remember this moment, it doesn’t get better than
this.”
Groom – My most memorable moment comes from Jasmine’s vows. Standing
across from her looking into my soon to be wife’s eyes I was taken back and
brought to tears with some of the words she had to say to me. In this moment
with the sun beaming down on us, surrounded by the mountains, it was as close
to perfection as I could have imagined. My beautiful wife, our favourite place and
our most important people surrounding us. 10 years of being together had
accumulated into the perfect day.
Tell me about the special aspects of your day that made it unique to you
two?
What made this day unique to us was how we chose to have our wedding. We
both really wanted something intimate and small so that we could actually enjoy
the day without having to worry about making sure everyone was taken care of;
we actually got to sit down and have nice conversations with our guests. We
wanted just our immediate families and best friends present. We are both ‘low-
key’ people and value time spent with loved ones and enjoying the moment
without being overwhelmed, so this intimate wedding in the middle of the
mountains was perfect for us.
Besides making the choice to marry each other, what was the easiest
decision you made for your wedding? What made it so easy?
The easiest choice we made was picking the venue. We knew we wanted a very
intimate, mountain wedding and Emerald Lake definitely provided that. It is so
secluded, has no wifi or cell reception, and the views are phenomenal.
What was the most difficult, time consuming choice that you made for your
wedding day? And advice to couples on this?
Definitely gathering all the decorations and little details. There is so much to think
about from the centre pieces, to the guest book, welcome signs, pictures, seating
chart etc. My advice is to start collecting decorations early, and to browse buy
and sells regularly to see if anything catches your eye. Don’t wait until the last
month :).
Advice to couples planning their wedding day?
My advice would be to do lots of research on vendors, and pick ones that suit
your style. We looked around for both a photographer and a videographer for a
while because these were two things that were super important to us, and we
wanted to make sure that whoever we chose captured our day perfectly (as we
will be looking at these for years to come). I would also say to budget so that you
can spend a bit more on the things that are important to you. For us, investing in
a quality photographer and videographer was worth every penny because as our
memories of little moments fade, the pictures and videos will bring us right back
to the special moments we shared on our wedding day, and that is truly
invaluable.
